Growing up with a sibling is a unique journey filled with beautiful memories, fun and the occasional arguments. Sibling dynamics are also complex, filled with their own ups and downs. For siblings of children with special needs, this journey takes on an even deeper meaning. So this Rakshabandhan, let’s take a much needed moment to appreciate our lovely siblings, who’ve been with us through thick and thin; and also help our siblings as well!
Children who have a sibling with special needs, often feel as though they are a caregiver themself – in charge of their sibling’s well being. Additionally, feelings of neglect, jealousy and stress are also common.
Here are some ways for parents to help their children enhance their sibling relationships!
Create an atmosphere of open communication between your children. Encourage siblings to talk about their feelings, fears, and joys. Create an environment where they feel safe sharing their thoughts.
Encourage your children to spend quality time together! This will help them strengthen their bond and treat each other as equals. Additionally, make sure you also take out one – on – one time with each of your children. It’s important for each sibling to feel equally loved and cared for.
Treat your children as equals! Involve both siblings in activities and decisions, ensuring that everyone’s needs are considered. Activities can be planned keeping in mind each sibling’s interest and capabilities.
Finally, as a parent, teach siblings about their special needs brother or sister’s condition in an age-appropriate manner to promote understanding and empathy. This acts as the basis of a love, accepting and empathetic lifelong relationship.
This Rakshabandhan, let’s share with our siblings how much we love them, and appreciate everything they do for us – let’s strive to create healthy and harmonious sibling dynamics!
